The blocks of the outer east were sized in an era when a back shed was assumed, and most of them still have one, or are about to get a better one. A shed is only as good as the slab under it: poured level, sized to the load, and high enough out of the ground that water runs away from the door instead of under it.

Specified by the load

A garden shed holding the mower and the bikes needs 100mm of concrete on SL72 mesh. A garage, carport or workshop, where a car or a lathe will sit, needs 125mm on SL82. The difference costs little on the day and everything a decade later, which is why the thickness and mesh are written into the quote against the published specification rather than left to whoever turns up.

Set out for the shed, not the other way round

The slab is set out to the shed maker’s base dimensions, checked square on the diagonals, with hold-down positions considered before the pour. On Croydon’s sloped blocks the slab is benched into the fall and the uphill edge drained so the shed stays dry through winter.

What it costs

Shed and garage slabs run $110 to $150 per square metre supplied and laid. Breaking out an old slab first adds $35 per square metre through the removal and replacement service. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed. The cost guide sets out the drivers, and a path to the shed poured on the same day shares the day’s set-up cost.

    Site measure

Free, at your place. The job is measured, falls and access are checked, and finishes are picked from sample boards against the house in daylight.

  2. 02

    One written quote

One fixed number in writing, itemised against the published specification. If a council crossover permit may be required, you know before anything is booked.

  3. 03

    The build

The old surface out where there is one, base material brought in and compacted where the ground needs it, steel mesh laid, then the pour. Most residential jobs are one to two days on site.

  4. 04

    The finish

Control joints cut to direct any movement, exposed aggregate washed and sealed after cure, and vehicles on it seven days after the pour.

Common questions

Shed and garage slabs questions

How thick should a shed slab be?

A garden shed slab is 100mm with SL72 mesh. A garage or workshop slab, where a vehicle or machinery will sit, is 125mm with SL82 mesh. The right slab is the one specified for the load, which is settled at the site measure and written into the quote.

What does a shed slab cost in Croydon?

Shed and garage slabs run $110 to $150 per square metre supplied and laid, with size, access and ground conditions setting where in the range a job lands. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

Do you pour slabs for dwellings?

No. Shed, garage, carport and workshop slabs are outbuilding work and we keep to it. Dwelling slabs are structural work under a building permit and belong with a registered builder's slab contractor.

Does a shed slab need a permit?

The slab itself usually does not, though larger sheds can need a building permit in their own right depending on size and siting, which is a question for a building surveyor. We confirm in writing what the concreting needs before anything is booked.
