Concrete removal cost, explained

Most concreting in the outer east starts with something coming out, and removal is the part of the quote people find hardest to compare. Ours is one line: $35 per square metre on top of the new surface, covering saw cutting, break out, loading and tip fees. On a 45 m² driveway that is about $1,600 inside the total; on a 15 m² path, closer to $500. Reinforced slabs and thick old crossovers sit at the top of the effort scale but the rate holds; what moves a quote is ground repair underneath, and that is itemised separately at the site measure rather than discovered on the day.

Concrete patio cost by size

At $100 to $180 per m²: a 16 m² courtyard slab runs about $1,600 to $2,900, a 24 m² alfresco $2,400 to $4,300, and a 40 m² entertaining area $4,000 to $7,200. The finish sets the rate, plain broom finish at the bottom, oxide colour in the middle and exposed aggregate at the top, while the levels work against the house is the same in every case.

What moves every rate

Size. A truck, a crew and a day cost the same for 15 m² as for 60 m², so small jobs carry a higher rate. Pairing jobs, a path with the driveway, a shed slab with the patio, is the single best way to buy concrete cheaper.

Access and slope. Where the truck cannot reach the pour, concrete is pumped or barrowed, and that is labour. Sloped blocks around Croydon Hills and Heathmont budget 10 to 20 percent extra.

Finish. Plain grey, oxide colour and exposed aggregate step up in that order. The finish only changes the top; the base, mesh and thickness underneath stay the same, and they are where the money should go first.

Ground. Maroondah sits on the clay of the foothills, and where the ground needs base material brought in and compacted, that is quoted up front rather than discovered later.

Common questions

Concreting cost questions

How much does concrete removal cost?

As part of a replacement job, removal adds $35 per m2 to the new surface, covering saw cutting, break out, loading and disposal. A replaced 45 m2 driveway therefore carries about $1,600 of removal inside its total. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

How much does a concrete patio cost?

Patio and alfresco slabs run $100 to $180 per m2 supplied and laid, so a typical 24 m2 alfresco lands between $2,400 and $4,300. The finish sets where in the range the job sits, with broom finished plain concrete at the bottom and exposed aggregate at the top.

How much does coloured concrete cost?

Oxide coloured concrete sits in the middle of each range, above plain grey and below exposed aggregate. On a driveway that means roughly $120 to $150 per m2 supplied and laid. The oxide runs through the whole slab rather than being a surface coating, so it does not wear off.

What makes one concreting quote cheaper than another?

Almost always the preparation. A cheap quote cuts corners under the slab or uses lighter mesh. It looks identical on day one and cracks in year two. Ask every quote to state the base, the mesh and the thickness in writing, and compare those.
