The outer east lives outdoors for half the year, and the patio is where it happens. A good patio slab is the flattest, most level-critical concrete on a block: it has to meet the house exactly, fall away from it invisibly, and look right against everything it touches, from the deck boards to the pool coping.
Levels first
Every patio starts from the levels: door thresholds, damp courses, weep holes, the existing paving it has to meet. The slab is set out so water moves away from the house at a fall you will never notice underfoot, and edges are formed clean where the lawn or garden beds take over.
Finishes for entertaining
Exposed aggregate leads for alfresco areas and pool surrounds, where grip underfoot around water is worth as much as the look. Coloured concrete gives a modern extension a single charcoal plane, and plain broom finish remains the economical base under a roofed pergola. Whatever the finish, the specification underneath is the same.
